Padmaavat music review: Move over Ghoomar, Nainowale Ne and Binte Dil are the tracks you will listen on loop instead

Here is our review of the music of Padmaavat

Padmaavat is all set to finally take over the theatres on January 25. The movie stars Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh in the lead roles and has been directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. We hope when the movie does find a release, it is remembered more for the content rather than the controversies associated with it since the beginning. Two days ahead of the release, makers have released the album of Padmaavat online. The songs have been composed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and you would know that without us mentioning it as his trademark musical exquisiteness overpowers each and every single track of Padmaavat. Ghoomar

Haven’t we all heard Ghoomar more than enough number of times already?  The song composed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali has been topping the music charts all over for the past many weeks. Despite having a folk vibe to it, the song is being loved by everyone across the board. Shreya Ghoshal who shot to fame after featuring on the soundtrack of Bhansali’s Devdas (Bairi Piya, Dola Re) casts a spell in Ghoomar as well. Swaroop Khan provides additional vocals.

Ek Dil Ek Jaan

This love ballad, in comparison, might be the weakest title in the album. Other songs available on the jukebox almost ruin the magic of Ek Dil Ek Jaan. Nevertheless, the song has been crooned beautifully and Padmaavat should put singer Shivam Pathak on the map. 

Khalbali

This energetic number is fun to listen to but I am left wondering about its placement in this epic drama. The song titled Malhari in Bajirao Mastani seemed extremely out of place going by the time period the movie was set in. Something similar seems to be getting repeated with Khalbali. This is Shivam Pathak’s second solo in the album and it is evident that he can be relied upon for heavy duty songs in the future as well.

Nainowale Ne

This is definitely the best song of the Padmaavat soundtrack. A big round of applause to Sanjay Leela Bhansali for composing this beautiful melody. Neeti Mohan’s saccharine sweet voice will make you want to listen to this number on loop. Lyricists Siddharth-Gari ma also deserve a round of applause. Nainowale Ne is upbeat and yet is simple and grounded. It has been a long time since we had a song like this.

Holi

The Holi number is unlike anything many of us have ever heard. In the times when we enjoy Balam Pichkari, this song has a very Madhuban Me Jo Kanhaiya vibe to it. The description makes it clear that this is a Manganiyars and Langa’s folk song. The number is very well adapted with added instrumental magic.

Binte Dil

This is the token Arijit Singh song that every Bollywood movie has these days. Arijit has a delightful voice. In fact, we get to hear a very different texture of his voice in this song. The singer should make it a point to be exclusively available to select few songs. What struck me the most about Binte Din is that it will easily fit in a movie set in the modern era. I am eagerly waiting to find out where this ditty finds a place in Padmaavat.

All in all the soundtrack of Padmaavat is above average at the least. I wonder why the best songs on the album Binte Dil and Nainowale Ne were kept under wraps! Also, I was disappointed that I did not find the theme music from the trailer were missing from the soundtrack. The humming in the beginning plus the ballad about Rani Sa would have made a good addition to the album.
