Fukrey Returns falls short only when compared to its earlier chapter. Read our full review here....

After having a ‘dream’ run with their first film, Fukrey, back in 2013, the Fukreys are back with another chapter from their life. Starring Pulkit Samrat, Varun Sharma, Manjot Singh, Ali Fazal, Richa Chadha and Pankaj Tripathi in major roles, the film continues the story of the infamous four and their encounter with the lady don. Yes, Bholi Punjaban has returned and so have the Fukreys but should they really have? Let’s find out…

What’s it about

So Bholi Punjaban (Richa Chadha) is out of jail, with some help from a politician and now she must pay him back both in cash and in kind. And who else would she turn to but the Fukreys, with whom she has an old account to settle. She tortures them into submission and hatches a plan to make instant money through a ponzi scheme. However, things are not the same with the four anymore. While Choocha (Varun Sharma) still ‘dreams,’ thanks to a bizzare turn of events, he now also experiences premonitions. Yes, he who dreamt, now predicts and it is just as confusing an affair as his sleepy tales were. But his bestie, aka Hunny, interprets these as well and tries to make sense of it to their advantage. Lali (Manjot Singh) is still trying to get his dad to see his point and turn the sweet shop into a cafe but with little success. Zafar (Ali Fazal), on the other hand, seems to have made a lot of progress, having succeeded as a musician and is planning to marry the love of his life, Neetu (Vishakha Singh). However, their lives are turned upside down when Bholi’s plan backfires and they must now deal with not only the enraged investors, but also the police and a power-hungry politician.

What’s hot

It can’t be easy to steal the spotlight in a multistarrer film but Varun Sharma and Pankaj Tripathi do it with absolute nonchalance. While Varun’s Choocha was a winner in the first part of the film as well, he was more of a caricature there. In the second part, his character is just as stupid but Varun has brought another dimension to it. This time around you won’t dismiss Choocha’s character as a sidey. In fact, he shadows over most in the film. The other character that will have you going LOL every few minutes, is that of Panditji, played by Pankaj. The manner in which he delivers those one-liners, makes them even funnier if that was possible. Apart from their performances, the other part of the film that was truly enjoyable was the background track. Not only did it bring about a sense of continuity, but also kept the pace of the film going.

What’s not

While Choocha and Panditji shine, the others don’t get much to do. In the first film, Fukreys seem to be more of an unit, here they look like a one-man show. That can never be good for a film that cashes in on the bromance factor. Besides, the reason why the earlier part worked majorly was because the audience loved watching a gang of good-for-nothings trying to get through to college with their tricks. Here, that connect seems to be missing. The problems, this time, are not their own. They are being forced into it, which in itself, dilutes their sense of purpose. Also, in Fukrey, the manner in which Hunny interpreted Choocha’s dream, was half the fun. When they returned this time around, the interpretation was reduced to a mere glimpse. How can that go down well? Getting a lady don to invest in a ‘dream scheme’ is funny and rather clever but getting involved in a ponzi scheme for a gangster and then being chased by a politician is downright stupid – not something that we expect of these lazy but smart guys. Like most sequels, this one seems to be trying hard to replicate what the makers thought had worked for the first part. For a sleeper hit like Fukrey, it is difficult to put a finger on the exact thing that might have made the film click.

What to do

Despite its flaws, fukrey returns falls short only when compared to the first part. As a stand alone film, it manages to keep you engaged throughout with some really funny scenes that will have you rolling on the floor. If you are looking for some comic relief, this is the film that you should head to.
