At the domestic market, the film had a massive opening, raking in Rs 31.50 crore on day one. On the other hand, it raked in an impressive cumulative amount of Rs 12 crore in the overseas market. This means, Mersal has raked in a grand total of Rs 43.50 crore in the worlwide market at the end of day one, which is fantastic to say the least. Giving us the exact break up of all the collections, industry tracker and trade expert, Ramesh Bala tweeted, “#Mersal Day 1 Worldwide Box Office: All-India – Rs 31.50 crore. Overseas: Rentrak – Rs 5.50 crore. Non-Rentrak – Rs 6.50 crore. Total – Rs 43.50 crore.”

On day one, the film beat the likes of Thala Ajith’s Vivegam and Rajinikanth’s Kabali at the Chennai box office. At the domestic box office, Mersal also beat the day one collections of Vivegam. In the overseas market too, it has managed to achieve several such feats. All in all, Mersal has had a magnificent start to it’s box office campaign. 

Collecting such a fantastic amount on Diwali Day (October 19) is a huge achievement because generally people are busy with the festivities on this day. In fact, the day after Diwali, i.e. today (October 20), is always massive. So expect Mersal to witness a fantastic jump on the second day. Our trade expert – Akshaye Rathi (exhibitor and distributor) also added, “Mersal has taken a phenomenal start at the box office. Collecting such a huge number through the Tamil version alone is insane. With a good word of mouth publicity and great reviews, I expect it go up, up and away in the days to come.
