DC superheroes tend to be dark and brooding. While the fanboys have accepted them, some continue to criticise DC heroesand compare them with Marvel. 'Shazam!' breaks the mould with a joyful and light-hearted superhero movie.

'Shazam!' is an entertaining yet earnest coming-of-age story about a teenager who learns that with great power comes great responsibility. Billy Batson (Angel) is a foster child, abandoned by a mother who he is still in search of. Billy is known for running away from homes.

The movie offers an encouraging depiction of foster care, as the most recent family to take Billy in are good people who want the best for him. Life changes for the little boy following a freak encounter with a mysterious wizard who turns him into an adult superhero.

While Billy isn’t familiar with how a superhero works, his nerd friend, Freddy Freeman (Grazer), steps in to guide him through the process of self-realisation and how to do the ‘super’ job.

The importance and effects of the family in the characters are a binding narrative in the movie. The villain in Dr Thaddeus Sivana (Strong) was triggered by how his brother and father treated him as a kid.

Levi comes across perfect as Shazam. He’s entertaining and completely believable as a teenager inside a muscular superhero’s body. It’s a treat to see him perform brilliantly.

2018 was a great year for entertainment. Hollywood churned out a slew of hits, from the stable of Marvel, DC Comics, to those from Disney.

Well, this year too, promises to be an exciting one. The line-up in 2019 includes Quentin Tarantino’s latest, 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood', 'Moonlight' director Barry Jenkins’ second feature, and Taraji P Henson in 'What Men Want'.

From 'Avengers: Endgame' to 'Toy Story 4', 'StarWars' to 'The Lion King', Disney has at least five films that could very well shatter records at the global box office in 2019.
