Kareena Kapoor Khan declares the 10th edition of Bengaluru International Film Festival open in a glittering ceremony

In a ceremony marked by glitter and glamour, Bollywood star Kareena Kapoor Khan on Thursday declared the 10th edition of the weeklong Bengaluru International Film Festival (Biffes) open, on the steps of the Vidhana Soudha.

“Cinema is the coming together of people, which has no language, religion and regional boundaries,” she said, to a resounding applause. “Cinema is in my blood. It is my passion and it is food for the soul for me.”

Recounting the Kapoor family’s connection with Karnataka, especially her grandfather Raj Kapoor, she said, “My grandfather Raj Kapoor’s spirit is amongst us to night, blessing us all storytellers, directors to keep up the good work they are doing ... I am saying this not because of my presence, it is because of his (Raj Kapoor’s) love for Mysuru,” she said. Raj Kapoor had shot many of his films in Mysuru.

She went on to express her dream of acting in a Kannada film. “I don’t know the language, but I hope some day I will entertain in your language. May be in a film some day.”

Director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra of Rang De Basanti fame, who was at the inaugural, said, “I’m the son-in-law of Karnataka as my wife, P.S. Bharati, (who worked for Rang De Basanti as editor) is from Bengaluru.” He was all praise for the support of the government of Karnatka to the film industry. “I have not seen a government which is putting its heart and soul, besides support and patronage,” he said.

Describing cinema as a “family”, renowned Iranian actor Fatemeh Motamed-Arya said, “Wherever there is cinema, we can see peace and humanity.” Cinematographer Marc Baschet said attending Biffes to him was the “same feeling of getting an Oscar!”

Though Chief Minister Siddaramaiah was not present at the inaugural, many of his Cabinet colleagues and political leaders were present. Many members of the Kannada film fraternity were present, though some of the big stars, including Shivarajkumar, Sudeep and Darshan were not to be seen.

‘Foundation stone for film city in Mysuru on Mar. 6’

S.V. Rajendra Singh Babu, chairperson of the Karnataka Chalanachitra Academy, declared at the Biffes inaugural programme that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had assured him of laying the foundation stone for the ambitious film city project in Mysuru on March 6.

Mr. Babu and Sa.Ra. Govindu, president of the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce, said the Kannada film industry was indebted to Mr. Siddaramaiah.

Italian satire screened

Italian film It’s the Law, directed by Salvatore Ficarra and Valentino Picone, was screened at the inaugural function. It is a satire that looks at a political misadventure in a Sicilian village.

Over the next eight days, 200 films from 68 countries will be screened as part of the festival, besides paying homage to greats who passed away in the last one year, including veteran actor Shashi Kapoor.

Mysuru misses its date with fest; film buffs upset

The government not holding Biffes in the State’s cultural capital Mysuru and restricting the festival to Bengaluru this time has created discontentment among the cine buffs. Decentralisation of Biffes had helped people from other parts of the State, especially members of film societies, to watch global films of their choice.

Members of the Udupi Chitra Samaja (UCS) have also registered their dissent by writing to the festival director. K. Phaniraj of the UCS said, “Biffes took a historic step by decentralising the festival. But, unfortunately, it rolled back its decision for reasons best known to them, and disappointed thousands of cinephiles."
