Anushka Sharma on nepotism: In the same industry different people can be treated differently

Recently at the trailer launch of Jab Harry Met Sejal, the lead actress of the film, Anushka Sharma and the director of the film, Imtiaz Ali were asked their take on nepotism as they are the outsiders in the industry who have made it big. Also present at the launch was Shah Rukh Khan, who joined through video call. However at the time the question was asked he was not available due to bad network.

Imtiaz said, “Hum teeno yahaan par hain, hum teeno baahar se hain. Toh agar hamaare khilaaf koi bhai-bhatijawaad ya nepotism hua hota toh hum yahaan pe hote hi nahin na. Main apne baare mein yeh bahut confidence se keh sakta hoon ki agar main yahaan par hoon toh it’s only because of the love and affection of the existing film industry at that time, that they listen to me is perhaps the only place I truly belong. So I don’t see it, I don’t know about Anushka.” 

Anushka too said the similar thing but she also slyly maintained that just because she didn’t face it, doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. She said, “Like what he said, we are here today and reached where we are within the same industry. I have personally, I would say, been launched by banner like Yash Raj Films. With me or with Ranveer Singh, they have always put talent before anything else. I don’t think it was something I even thought of, quite honestly speaking, when I entered the industry. But at the same time I think sabke experiences alag hote hain and we all have to respect and value that and ya that’s it I mean, same industry mein different people can be treated differently and that has to be respected and valued.”

Just yesterday, Yash Raj Films’ newest talent Anya Singh exclusively told BollywoodLife about her experience on nepotism. She said, “I mean, I am nobody to really comment on nepotism but it is something that I feel exists in every industry but it’s hyped in our industry. And I feel that today our audience is only accepting and encouraging ‘talent’. So, through nepotism you do get a certain movie but you’ll only stay and be here for the long run if you have the talent and skills. Because the audience today, doesn’t accept anybody who doesn’t. So…ya, that’s my take on nepotism.”
