Brad Pitt And Srk did A Joint Press Conference In Mumbai Today.

Two of the worlds biggest movie stars talking about the death of movie theatres should have been a taboo topic. But when Shah Rukh Khan and Brad Pitt sat across each other in Mumbai on Wednesday, that was the question on everyone’s mind.

But hope has always been a constant theme in both stars’ films. So the conversation was as much about looking at the future as it was about burying the past.

“This is not my first time in India. We shot A Mighty Heart here. I got to put a helmet on and roam around on an Enfield. I try to reinvent constantly. And fortunately we were about to survive our mistakes,” said Brad Pitt.

David Michod, Director Of War Machine.

Pitt’s new film, the David Michod-directed war satire War Machine will be released on Netflix on Friday, and barring a catastrophe, it is expected to be their biggest film yet. But perhaps as a sign of things to come, it will be seen only on the smallest of screens.

“The only thing that keeps us going is the will to survive,” said Shah Rukh Khan,

When asked how does he protect his films and storytelling, he added, “There are so many people in commercial cinema trying to protect what they feel is the right thing, but it is not always the thing to protect.”

Pitt also opined, “Often a gamble is where it pays off. We’ve been able to do that with out production company. We have to make time for ourselves, time for family. I’ve been able to compartmentalise my life.”

To which, SRK quipped, “My kids, more often than not don’t like my films. It is not a special thing in the house for papas film to do well. At home you’re a nobody.”

So, how do stars pick a film? “Good script, a filmmaker who excites me. Putting myself in a good directors hands.  I don’t know about shah Rukh, but I want to surround myself with friends,” said Pitt.

Shah Rukh agreed, “Sometimes I don’t even want to know the story. I just want to know who’s telling it.”

Will Brad Pitt consider doing a Bollywood film? “Ours are about the same, and we don’t even dance. I can never do a Bollywood film because I can’t dance.”

SRK isn’t one to let him go so easily, he said, “Oh, we’ll make you dance.”

Srk And Pitt Were At Their Casual Best.

King Khan showed admiration for Brad Pitt’s work, “I found you amazing in 12 monkeys. You were mind blowing in that film. That’s when I became a fan of Brad Pitt.”

To which Pitt said, “I locked myself in a room for a couple of weeks for 12 monkeys. And just saw where that’ll take us. You can’t get into a character if you have to sing and dance every 20 minutes. I’m sorry to say I don’t know how to do it.”

Brad Pitt further said, “As I get older, it’s a big commitment. There are long days. It’s a big time a way from family. More and more I find myself concentrating more on the production side. And I find it really rewarding to open doors for filmmakers.”

Is there any fear of Hollywood overtaking Bollywood? “If we don’t adapt ourselves in terms of marketing, visual effects, scriptwriting and professionalism, we will be overtaken. If we do not learn from Hollywood, there is a real fear of being overtaken. Spider-Man does as well as a Hindi film, so we have to adapt. Scripting especially. If we don’t do that, we’ll have an issue over the next 20 years. We have such wonderful stories to tell but we aren’t telling them well enough. We treat our stories like fads. Singing and dancing has to be a part of Bollywood movies, if only to keep brad away from our movies,” said Shah Rukh.

Pitt also revealed his mind on film business. “We produced the new movie Okja, by Bong Joon-ho. We would never be able to make this movie otherwise. Because it’s not how we think.”

Why was Netflix the right place for War Machine? “The business model for the studio system in Hollywood they just can’t make films like these anymore. Print and advertising is so expensive. From a viewers perspective more films are getting made. It’s a renegade new resurgence of filmmaking,” said Pitt.

“I never knew how I would get to make the movies I wanted to make. But then this Netflix window opened up. War Machine is exactly the kind of movie the traditional Hollywood studios aren’t making anymore. I just feel lucky I didn’t waste my time going to film school. Great art comes from freedom,” said David Michod, director of War Machine.

Shah Rukh And Brad Pitt Looked Totally Comfortable With Each Other.

Can Netflix impact a market like India? “Weekend collections, monthly collections, bog down our industry. Inshallah streaming will take that away. In India every household has a filmmaker,” said Shah Rukh Khan.

Do you see big changes taking place in the movie business? “I don’t pretend to know. But how we view movies will change,” said Pitt.

“Technology is going to make a huge play. Films like Baahubali. They will come to the forefront,” added SRK.
