Today, Khiladi Akshay Kumar shared the first look of his upcoming film, Kesari, where he is playing the central character of Havildar Ishar Singh. The biographical war film is based on the epic battle of Saragarhi. Interestingly, along with Akshay Kumar, Randeep Hooda and Ajay Devgn are also doing films on similar subjects, where they are both essaying the character of Havildar Ishar Singh. While the title of Randeep Hooda’s film has not been announced yet, Ajay Devgn’s film is titled Sons of Sardaar. In fact, the subject has also been explored on the small screen with the show, Sarfarosh: Saragarhi 1897, where Mohit Raina is playing the lead role.

But what is the story behind the battle of Saragarhi and why are makers excited to narrate the story through cinema and serial? Here are the reasons. The battle of Saragarhi, which happened on September 12, 1897, is considered to be one of the greatest ever in the history of war. 21 Sikhs, who were a part of the British India regiment protecting the forts of Lockhart and Gulistan on the border areas of Afghanistan, took on 10,000 Afghan soldiers, who attacked Saragarhi.

The regiment was led by Havildar Ishar Singh and it defended its post against the army of Afghan soldiers and even managed to successfully stop two attacks. However, the final attack from the Afghans was too powerful for them, and all of them perished. But they had bought enough time for the British to bring in reinforcements and destroy the enemies. All the martyrs from this war were honoured with gallantry awards as per their ranks. In fact, an epic poem, Khalsa Bahadur, was also composed in the honour of their memory and they are a part of the curriculum in Punjab.

Now that we know the basics of this inspiring tale, we are more than excited to watch the epic war drama on the silver screen. What about you? Share your thoughts below.
