As an actress, Anushka Sharma is known to speak her mind on a variety of issues. The woman, who is now the face of Swachh Bharat Mission, has taken over another role — the initiative to build an open defecation free (ODF) India for which the Indian government has flagged off a nationwide campaign.
A source was quoted in daily as saying, "As a part of the government's Swachh Bharat initiative, Anushka will bring to focus the toilet hygiene and safety of women with 'Darwaza Band' — a national campaign encouraging everyone to build toilets in their homes, especially keeping women's health in mind".
Talking about why Anushka took up the cause, the actress was quoted by a newspaper as saying, "I was immediately drawn by the aims and objectives of 'Swachh Bharat Mission' and 'Darwaza Band'. The message focuses on a very important issue of our country. I am grateful to have been chosen to shoulder this responsibility."

Anushka also said that she was left feeling horrible when she got to know that it was not safe for women to defecate in the open as there were high chances of them getting sexually assaulted. She said, "Women actually get sexually assaulted when they go to defecate in the open and suffer humiliation. It also poses huge health and safety risks because for the menfolk, building toilets is not important. They (women) must be protected from this hazard."
